The purpose of the Hispanic Mentoring Program is to recruit, select, and train 150 community volunteers to serve as mentors for Hispanic children in grades 3-6 in Hamblen County Schools. The children will be identified as low-income and at-risk for educational failure. The mentors and mentees will work together to improve the students' English language skills, their school bonding, and the promotion of pro-social behaviors. The program will work to decrease the rate of absenteeism, the number of school drop-outs, and involvement in activities related to juvenile delinquency.
Our Local Education Agency partner (LEA) is the Hamblen County Department of Education. In addition, several other non-profit agencies have agreed to assist. Also, local businesses, civic groups, and churches have agreed to serve as partners.
Schools identified for services within Hamblen County: Fairview-Marguerite Elementary, Hillcrest Elementary, Lincoln Heights Elementary, Lincoln Heights Middle School, West Elementary, and Meadowview Middle School.
